A Sea Trek is a five day educational
program using five metre sailing cutters that are equipped for sailing expeditions around
the Dampier Archipelago. An expedition usually lasts five days depending on the skill of
the participants.
The vessels are solidly
constructed of fibreglass and have excellent load carrying capacity and proven to handle
rough conditions with safety. Each vessel is equipped with a 6HP auxiliary motor, radio
and safety gear. All Sea Treks are accompanied by support vessel(s) which carry VHF and 27
MHZ radios as well as mobile phone communications.
The cutters are self sufficient and do not rely
on the support craft for supplies. The boats are powerful motivators for learning about
the marine environment and substantial benefits are gained in the areas of self
confidence, problem solving, teamwork and leadership.
THE PROGRAM
Expedition preparation
includes emergency response, first aid, radio procedure, navigation and boat handling.
Emphasis is placed on planning, personal safety and sound environmental practices.
Leadership skills and self
responsibility are an important part of the pro- gram and an integral part of the
experiential learning approach.
COST
The cost for
2006 is $50
per person, per day with a minimum of $3000 per group. A group can be 24 students. This
cost covers all food, fuel and general expenses.
