Insurance
Teachers
are automatically covered during performance of duties by workers' compensation if they
are injured and by public liability if someone is injured because of teacher negligence.
There is no cover for loss
or damage of personal property.
Volunteer workers who, with
the approval of the principal, assist during an educational excursion are automatically
covered during the performance of duties by personal accident insurance and by public
liability insurance if someone is injured because of their negligence. There is no cover
for loss or damage of personal property.
Students are covered only
by public liability insurance if they are injured as a result of teacher negligence,
either at school or during an excursion.
Parents should be aware
that they are responsible for insuring their children for personal accidents and loss or
damage of personal property.
However, schools may assist
parents by including insurance in the cost of educational excursions. Group insurance, for
a minimal cost per student, is available through SGIO's Group Excursion Insurance Policy.
For further information, schools may contact SGIO's Education Team directly.
