The following
are places of interest around the Dampier/Karratha region. Visits to these places can be
incorporated into your camp activities.
MILLSTREAM NATIONAL PARK
Millstream
National Park, situated on the Fortesque River is 200 kms from Dampier and takes approx. 3
hours by bus. There are barbecue and picnic facilities as well as a suitable area for
camping. The Camp Director will assist in planning an overnight camp. Swimming is possible
and there are swimming holes en route.
HARDING DAM
Students can visit the Harding River Dam which was built in 1985. Students can use the
barbecue and picnic facilities, a small oval and swim at the dam. The dam is 90 kms from
Dampier and takes approx. 1.5 hours by bus.
ABORIGINAL CARVINGS,
BURRUP PENINSULAR
The Camp Director will take students to a valley containing over 1000 rock
carvings. Follow up activities include art and aboriginal history of the Burrup. The
activity takes approx. 2 hours. (Upper Primary and High Schools.)
HAMERSLEY IRON
Hamersley Iron provide a comprehensive tour of their operation. An excellent visual
presentation is followed by a tour of the facilities at Dampier. Approx. 1.5 hours.
DAMPIER SALT
Dampier Salt provide a tour of their operation which includes evaporation ponds, salt
stockpiles and the shipping facility. A bus is required for this tour and takes approx. 2
hours.
NORTH WEST
SHELF PROJECT (Natural Gas)
Woodside Petroleum have an excellent visitors centre showing their operations on the
Burrup Peninsula. This huge development is one of the worlds largest natural
resource developments. The tour takes approx. 1.5 hours.
COSSACK
The town was established in 1863 but at the turn of the century the port facilities were
transferred to Samson. The town is slowly being restored. It takes an hour by bus from
Dampier and is an excellent excursion if combined with the old Roebourne Gaol and Samson.
Takes a full day.
MYAREE POOL
Situated 40 kms from Dampier on the Maitland River, Myaree Pool is a great area for a
picnic and swim. The area is suitable for environmental studies.
DAMPIER BACK BEACH
Situated 2 kms from the Camp School, the beach has picnic and barbecue facilities, an oval
and beach shelters. The beach is
suitable for study and recreation.
ISLAND TOUR
HAMPTON HARBOUR
The Camp Director can take students to East Intercourse Island in the schools
expedition boats. This is suitable for upper primary and above. There is an excellent
swimming beach and a reef area that is used for marine studies. This excursion depends on
the tides and weather.
HEARSONS COVE
This excursion is often combined with the Woodside or Aboriginal Carvings tour as it is on
the eastern side of the Burrup Peninsula. Swimming depends on tides. There are picnic
facilities and is approx. 15 mins from Dampier.
